Marine Environmental Protection Department

This department is responsible for marine environmental management and to prevent and combat sources of ship pollution in the marine environment and provide marine conservation management to guide the stakeholders on the best conservation initiatives as well as advice the government on key regulatory systems to put in place, to ensure sustainable marine environment since Somalia is endowed with the longest coastline in Africa and it lies in a very geographical strategic location. This Department is responsible the following duties:
  1. Prevention of marine Environmental Pollution.
  2. Promote and raise awareness on Coastal Environmental Protection.
  3. Implementing Environmental Policies and Practice
  4. To ensure safeguard the natural Marine environment
  5. Prepare for Contingency Plan for Oil Spill and other Acute pollution
  6. Mitigation and termination for Oil spill and acute pollution of offshore and onshore
  7. Ensuring compliance of international treaties and protocols in respect of protection of the marine environment
  8. Establishing a sound waste management mechanism that regulates disposal of wastes at any level.
  9. Organizing frequent clean-up campaigns and public awareness on the importance of clean and serene coastal shoreline.
