Maritime Safety and Security Department of the Ministry, is responsible Maritime Security Coordination, Maritime Safety, Maritime Information Sharing Center, marine accident and Casualties investigation and coordination of Search and Rescue (SAR). The following is the detailed functions and responsibilities of the of Department:
- Develop and implement marine safety policies and strategies for MPMT.
- Ensuring all commercial vessels meet required safety standards.
- Issuance of notices to mariners identifying danger to safety of shipping
- Coordination of safe carriage and handling of dangerous goods and cargoes on broad ships and at Ports Investigation of ship casualties
- Ensuring compliance of international treaties and protocols in respect of Maritime safety and security.
- Direction and supervision of matters relating to wrecks and salvage
- Investigation of ship casualties and present a report to the ministry
- Certify Security service providers in the Somalia territorial waters.
- Review and modify Procedures and Instructions where necessary to improve Safety Management System.
