Somali Maritime Administration (SMA) is one of the core departments of the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport. It is mandated to serve the maritime interest of the nation and work on effective, efficient and innovative maritime transport system.
The Maritime Administration Department of MPMT is responsible for the following:
- Synchronize the formulation, establishment and implementation ministries’ policies regarding maritime affairs of the nation.
- Administer and enforce the provisions of Somali Maritime Law No.5 and other legislations relating to the Maritime sector for the time being enforced and ensures the development of robust maritime industry.
- Control ministries policies implementation in maritime affairs
- Co-ordinate and synchronize maritime state resilience development and maritime resources management.
- Oversees matters pertaining to the training recruitment and welfare of seafarers.
- Co-ordinate maritime infrastructure building policies and carrying periodic Port state control inspections
- Responsible all matters pertaining to seafarers affairs, including registration, licensing, certification of seafarers and issuance of discharge books.
- Handles vessels registration, leads the Issuance of Harbor master’s Clearances and the issuance of certificate of registry.
- Administering and controlling over possession pertinence and use of maritime demesne.
- Lead successfully all efforts related to planning, production of Maritime workforce to close the gap in these demanding area/sector.
